If there’s ever a time to wear red lipstick, it’s definitely the holiday season. I love a classic red lip no matter what the season, but somehow it always seems even more appropriate this time of year. I did a post on my favourite festive reds two years ago, but since I’ve discovered quite a few new favourites this year, I figured it was about time for an update. This year I’m all about the matte red lip, so here are the three shades you need to fill all your festive needs.
FESTIVE REDS | LIPS & NAILS
THE CHERRY RED | NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl
One of my favourite shades of red to wear in the winter is definitely the more blue toned cherry red. More specifically, NARS Dragon Girl. I might even go as far as to claim that it’s my current favourite red lippie to wear, period. The formula is matte but easy to apply, and it seriously stays put all night long.
THE CLASSIC RED | MAC Ruby Woo
MAC Ruby Woo has been one of my go-to festive reds for the past couple of years, and it’s my favourite one to bust out on Christmas Eve. The shade has a hint of blue in it, but it’s still much redder than NARS Dragon Girl, making it the perfect classic red. Not too blue, not too orange. The formula is a bit of a pain to apply, since it’s so dry it’s almost powdery, but once you get it on it won’t budge. Just make sure to wear tons of lip balm so that your lips won’t get parched.
THE ORANGE RED | NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Red Square
The orange red is usually seen as a more summery option. But I love wearing it during the festive season too. NARS Red Square is my favourite, since it leans safely on the red side of things, and is not too orange. It offers a bright pop of colour, that’s the perfect partner to a gold glittery eye.
… And Nails to Match
When it comes to festive reds on the nails, I think that two shades are all you need. And naturally, you can never go wrong with Essie. For an orange toned red my favourite is Essie’s classic Fifth Avenue. But my all time favourite festive red is definitely the more blue toned cherry Jump In My Jumpsuit. Sadly it’s from a limited edition collection a few years back. But they usually bring out a similar shade every winter.
